Geographical Division of Nepal

Geography of Nepal can be divided into three geographical regions. According to Local governance operation act- 2074.

Himalayan Districts : Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Dolkha, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa, Morang, Mustang, Dolpa, Jumla, Mugu, Humla, Kalikot, Bajhang, Darchula, Dhadhing, Ramechhap, Gorkha, Rukum (East), Myagdhi (21 districts).

Hilly districts : Panchthor, Illam, Tehrathum, Dhanked, Bhojpur, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Kavrepalanchowk, Nuwakot, Lamjung Tanahu, Kaski, Syangja, Parwat, Baglung, Palpa, Arghakhachi, Gulmi, Rukum (west) Rolpa, Pyuthan, Salyan, Jajerkot, Dailekh, Doti, Achham, Baitadi, Daleldhura,

Inner terai : Udaypur, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Sindhuli, Nawalpur, Dang, Surkhet (7)

Terai Districts : Jhapa, morang, sunsari, Saptari, Dhanusha, mahakali, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, parsa, Parasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Banke, bardya, Kailali, Kanchanpur (18)

Himalayan Region

  • 15% of Nepal’s geography lies in this region
  • It is situated between 3000m above sea level. 25-50 km North-South
  • 28 famous Himalayan range of Nepal ( East to West)
  • Some mountain ranges of Nepal: Kanchanjanga, Janak, Umbak, Mahalangpur, Relwaling, Pumri, Jugal, Langtang, Ganesh, Serang, Kutung, Mansiri, Peri, Lugula, Damodar, Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhawalagiri, Mustang, Gautam, Palchung, Hamga, Kanjirowa, Kanti, Gorkha, Changla, Chandi, Nalakenkar, Gurans.
  • This region lies on Alpine and arctic climate zone.
  • Potato are grown at the height of 4400m from sea level in Chunkung village of Solukhumbu district.
  • 16% land area can only be cultivated.
  • Gorkha, Ramechhap, Dhading, Rukum East and Myagdi were added latter in Himalayan Region

Main Himalayas:-

  • Himalayas above 8000 m are found in this region.
  • There are 1312 mountains in Nepal above 6000m,

Inner Mountains:-

  • Famous Himalayan valley of this region are: Purang, Humla, Rongasar, Khumbu, Korma etc.These valleys are situated at an altitude of 2400-5000ft.
  • Cold temperate and decidious forests are found(treesare not so big)
  • Barley, Wheat, Kodo, Potato etc are grown at an altitude of 3000m.

Marginal Himalayas:-

  • Lies at an altitude of 6000-7000m on tibetian plate of Ganfa and Sang Po (Brahamaputra).
  • This area is mainly himalayan desert.
